Austin, TX (November 1, 2018).  ConnectedWay, LLC has announced the release of their ConnectedSMB Storage Provider and Server for Android Devices (ConnectedSMB for Android).  This is the same high quality, professional SMB stack that OEM Manufacturers have integrated into their products for the last ten years.  This product is finally available for the Android platform in an easy to use, intuitive application.  The Android product utilizes the “Storage Access Framework” which is a facility that extends native storage access with any number of custom adapters.   This allows existing Android applications, such Microsoft Office™, Adobe Acrobat™, Google Photos and many more to seamlessly  read and write content that are remote to the device as if they were stored locally on the device.

For example, a user with an Android phone can open up a Word™ doc stored on his/her desktop PC, can update a Powerpoint™ presentation stored on his/her laptop, can browse directories for content on remote computers, and can easily backup documents by simply copy and paste them using native file apps.  ConnectedSMB is integrated with Google’s native file manager so there is no need for third party file explorer applications.  Because ConnectedSMB utilizes Android’s Storage Access Framework, content does not have to be shadowed on the device in order to be edited.

ConnectedSMB is an alternative to cloud based solutions.  For performance reasons and security reasons, people may not wish to store their content on the cloud.  Instead, they store their files in a location local to their enterprise or their home.  Previously this content would be inaccessible from a user’s phone.  With ConnectedSMB, this content remains in its original location and is never moved.  Applications on the phone manipulate this content directly using the ubiquitous SMBv2 protocol.

What really makes ConnectedSMB stand out is that it comes with an SMBv2 Server.  This allows a user to share directories on his/her phone with users on a different phone.  This is a true workgroup configuration where users can freely and securely share their documents with others in the same workgroup without having to upload the content to the cloud.

ConnectedSMB has built in security features that are necessary for enterprise deployment.  It utilizes the latest SMBv2 secure authentication protocols for both client and server access.  It notifies phone users by a message and sound whenever the phone’s server is accessed and whenever access to the server is denied.  It has built-in intrusion detection and reaction so that the server is automatically shutdown when it detects an intrusion attempt.

ConnectedSMB is deployed as both a free version and a professional version.  The free version limits network configurations to one server and is deployed as a client only meaning the user will not have the ability to share files stored on his/her phone.
